High performance plastics are important in all phases of semiconductor manufacturing. It takes over 200 chemicals and gasses to produce an integrated circuit from semiconductor material. Many of the gasses and chemicals involved are extremely corrosive, such as nitric acid, hydrochloric acid and hydrofluoric acid. When exposed to harsh chemicals like this, metals will corrode, but some high-performance plastics will continue to perform incredibly well.
